Workshops on ‘The Work that Reconnects’

Introduced at the first Heart and Soul Group meeting of Transition Town Brixton in January 2009, we have presented two workshops on ‘The Work that Reconnects’, utilising methods developed by Joanna Macy (see http:/www.joannamacy.net). These were both held at the Bonnington Centre, Vauxhall, London, in order to make them as accessible as people in the local area - and particularly to those active in Transition Town Brixton. The first was held on Saturday 14 March 2009, co-led by Debbie Warrener and Jim Scott, and the second on Saturday 11 July 2009, co-led by Anna McIvor and Jim Scott. The second one was supported both by Save our World and Transition Town Brixton.

The first workshop was so successful that Debbie and Jim planned a further series of workshops and follow-on support sessions, both in order to widen the range of relevant experience and skill with this work, and to provide inner support during increasingly uncertain times. In fact it was only possible to hold one follow-on before Debbie had to withdraw from the series for personal reasons. Fortunately she was able to recommend Anna to replace her, a freshwater ecologist and founder member of Transition Cambridge, enabling the second workshop to take place. Debbie is a community activist, cross-cultural consultant, facilitator and coach who has worked in the field of international development for many years. Jim trained in group facilitation in London, practised in Bristol, retrained in Joanna Macy's work in 2008 and contributes a spiritual dimension to it from many years of yoga studies.

Joanna Macy's 'Work that Reconnects' offers a safe space to ground one's feelings and access one's power in nourishing, inspiring, uplifting and energising ways. It uses experiential exercises to explore emotional responses, reconnect with one's passion to act for life and transform concern for the world into active engagement.
